I <3 Math
I admit it--I'm a nerd. I get really excited about math. Well, as long as it's 2nd grade math, I suppose. This year my dream came true and I was given the opportunity to teach math ALL day long. Does it get any better than that? Not for me! I love being able to just focus on one thing and to really pour myself into it 100 %.
Anyone who has been around my mom knows that she can be a bit of an over-achiever at times. All of us girls are quickly coming to the realization that we have been blessed/cursed with this trait. Most of the time it is a good thing, but it can become pretty annoying when you come up with these brilliant ideas (that happen to be a TON of work) and just can't let them go. This was one of those weeks at work. I was really excited to come up with an idea of a Christmas themed symmetrical mural. Then I started researching making paper snowflakes and realized that they are really 6 sided, not four, so you can't just fold the paper in fourths. So I spent a bit perfecting my snowflake making skills so I could teach my kiddos. One class made snowflakes, another made ornaments for the tree, and another made presents to go under the tree--all with symmetry of course! While it was A LOT of work (and mess!!) the end product was worth it.

It just so happened that my principal came through the next day and loved it! BONUS POINTS!
Speaking of ideas that take too much time...I also thought it would be marvelous to have the kids find the letters of symmetry in their name. One of the standards is that they can find symmetry in letters of the alphabet, but isn't their own name so much more fun?? I thought so. Until I started calculating how many letters that would be. 357 in case you were wondering. Thankfully, I am super blessed with an amazing volunteer that made over 300 of them. So I was just left with a few and then sorted them to create 60 names. Once again, lots of work--but so worth it. The kids loved it and are so excited to get to take them home to hang on their walls.

So thanks mom, for blessing/cursing us with this lovely trait of having to be over the top. Other people seem to think it's a blessing--and maybe one of these days I'll agree.
